Shaquille’s Story
Born in Jamaica, I’ve been in the United States for a little over 2 decades, and I call NYC home. I graduated from New York University in 2017 after studying linguistics, psychology and creative writing. More recently, I studied for a Master’s in Counseling Psychology at The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. My training was relational and psychodynamic and prepared me to work especially with narratives of trauma and abuse. I hold a Licensed Mental Health Counselor Associate’s license in Washington, MC61456680.
Much of the work I feel drawn to is in the spirit of Lucille Clifton, that is, “making it up without a model.” We are trying to work together to heal while systems and institutions surrounding us are divesting from our flourishing at every turn. I think that developing a strong imagination for our potential for wholeness is the central element of how I hope to work with people.
I work primarily from a relational psychodynamic framework. I believe that relationships can be transformative and that the wounds we experience in formative relationships can be well addressed in a safer therapeutic relationship. When you feel yourself being drawn into reenacting unhealthy relational patterns, I hope we can bring awareness to those moments and attempt to develop new relational dynamics for you to bring to their relationships outside of therapy. I also hope we can develop your ability to relate within yourself too; you will hopefully leave my practice with deepened awareness of your typically unconscious thoughts and emotion.
Moreover, I plan to engage in narrative, trauma-informed care. I have a vested interest in working with survivors of multiple kinds of abuse, and part of our work around trauma will involve engagement in both the particularity of traumatic experiences and thematic insights. We will work to make sense of these disordered traumatic experiences, forming coherent stories that help to make sense of your humanity amidst suffering.
Outside of my work as a therapist, I find joy in binging anime, experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen, and spending time with my three cats (who sometimes pop up during sessions :-).
